large_IMG_7256Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine which involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points in the body. These points are along imaginary lines called meridians and acupuncture is based on the Chinese belief that the energy of life (Qi – pronounced ‘chee’) flows along these meridians. If you are feeling unwell, your Qi is believed to be disturbed or unbalanced.

The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a variety of factors including infection, pain, anxiety, disease, trauma and age. Acupuncture aims to restore the balance of Qi and helps you to feel well again by addressing both the underlying cause and symptoms of the problem. Acupuncture is used to ease symptoms of pain, and research has shown that it effectively stimulates the brain to produce endorphins– natural pain-relieving chemicals. It can be used alongside conventional medicine. Chartered physiotherapists, with appropriate postgraduate training, may use it to complement other physiotherapy techniques.
