Podiatry/Chiropody

A podiatrist works to improve the mobility, independence and quality of life for their patients by providing preventative care, diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of problems affecting the feet, ankles and lower limbs. Most people enjoy their visit to a podiatrist and are surprised that it is not painful or unpleasant.
What treatment does a podiatrist provide?
- Essential foot care for all ages – corns, callouses and verrucae treatment.
- Common foot problems eg. metatarsalgia, plantarfasciitis, bunions
- Vascular and neurological assessments and wound management
(annual diabetic check ups done) - Treatment of the diabetic and rheumatoid foot
- The use of local anaesthetic and nail surgery.
- Biomechanical assessment, prescription and making of insoles and orthotics (adults and children).
- Referal to a podiatric surgeon if required.

Sue Walker DPodM SRCh MChS
Sue qualified from the London Foot Hospital in 1979 as a state registered Chiropodist- now called a Podiatrist. Originally Sue worked for Bedfordshire NHS but for the last 21 years has been in full time private practice based in Wellingborough. She also spent a year teaching nail surgery at Northampton School of Podiatry and for the last 18 years has worked half a day at Great Staughton GP surgery. Sue has developed an interest in forensic Podiatry but her main interest is in the treatment of the diabetic foot. Sue reminds us "The average person is thought to walk 115,000 miles in a lifetime and as we only have one pair of feet they need to be looked after!"
