Getting Stronger at Woodfield Physiotherapy
For many of us the pandemic put a sudden stop to our usual social events and much loved group activities. Prolonged closures of health and fitness services and local lockdowns have all led to a rise in physical deconditioning. Now is the time to get back to the things that we enjoy and physical activity incorporating strength training will help you to do this!
Why is strength Important?
Strength training is important for us all however it has particular significance for older adults and for those with long term health conditions.
The NHS and Public Health England recommend daily exercise for adults aged 65 and over. Muscle and bone mass are two things that naturally decline as we age and both put us at risk of sustaining injuries such as fractures, especially if we have any balance impairments. For these reasons engaging in physical activity to improve our strength and balance is vital to supporting healthy aging, reducing the risk of falls, maintaining mobility, improving confidence and staying independent. People who exercise regularly have a lower risk of developing many long-term conditions, such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and some cancers. Research shows that physical activity can also boost self-esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy, as well as reducing your risk of stress, depression and dementia.
How can we help you to get stronger?
Interestingly a review of current scientific literature has found that Pilates exercise can improve balance, strength and function as well as reducing the risk of falls in older adults.
